Digital Marketing Account Manager
Mike’s journey with Radical Recruit is a powerful example of overcoming adversity with the right support and opportunities. His story highlights the importance of providing tailored assistance to young people with lived experience, helping them transition from challenging circumstances to impactful careers.
Mike was the first candidate we registered and our second ever placement. This photo was taken just before his interview, where he borrowed money from me to buy food for his cat, Mr Whiskers. Mike, a young care-experienced person, faced numerous barriers due to his experience as a homeless care leaver and several near misses with the criminal justice system.
We placed Mike into his first role as a play worker for the charity Young People Matter a year ago. This position was an excellent fit for Mike, allowing him to use his personal experiences to connect with and support young people facing similar challenges. Young People Matter is dedicated to recruiting individuals with lived experience, understanding that their insights and empathy are invaluable in creating a supportive environment for the youth they serve.
Mike’s background presented significant barriers. His experience as a homeless care leaver meant he had to navigate life without a stable support system, often facing stigma and limited opportunities. Radical Recruit provided crucial support, helping Mike overcome these barriers:
- CV Overhaul: We worked with Mike to redevelop his CV, highlighting his strengths and relevant experiences.
- Interview Preparation: Tailored interview coaching helped build Mike’s confidence and readiness for job interviews.
- Emotional Support: Understanding the importance of emotional stability, we offered continuous encouragement and guidance.
This support was essential for Mike, helping him transition from a challenging past to a promising future.
Mike excelled in his role at Young People Matter, quickly becoming a vital part of their team. His lived experience allowed him to relate deeply to the young people he worked with, providing genuine empathy and support. Recognising his potential, Mike pursued further opportunities.
18 months later, Mike applied for and smashed an interview for a leadership role in the Youth Justice space. His extensive personal experience with the care and criminal justice systems, as well as homelessness, made him an expert uniquely suited for the position. The role was made for him.
Mike will undoubtedly be an asset to his new team. His deep understanding of the issues faced by young people in the care and criminal justice systems positions him to make significant changes. Mike is going to change the world, one step at a time.
